Performance Group

The Performance Group was founded by Richard Schechner and pioneered the notion of environmental theater in the US. Their production of Sam Shepard's TOOTH OF CRIME, documented here was very influential.
There is a film version that we could rent.
Dionysus in 69 was a huge hit and exemplifies the adventurousness and the fatuousness of much 70s avant-garde theater. The play is documented in a book that Pearce Bunting borrowed from me in 1992. They use Schechner's antropologiacal approach to "translate" the action of the play into a series of actions that, for their structures, owe plenty to rituals from around the world. They also involve the audience and involve lots of nakedness. A film of this apparently exists, directed by Brian DePalma and others. No joke.
